Mentoring the Generations

"Cultivating intergenerational relationships is one of the most important ways in which effective faith communities are developing flourishing faith in both young and old." David Kinnaman, Author

Men, God has given us a mentoring-mandate for the generations we have charge over.

During our August Men’s Breakfast, Pastor Ara Veney, delivered a powerful word about our responsibility to mentor the young generations. He shared out of Malachi 4:6:

Mal 4:6 NLT "His preaching will turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and the hearts of children to their fathers. Otherwise, I will come and strike the land with a curse.”

This is a warning. The fathers must turn first, THEN the children …OTHERWISE…

He shared with us our EMIC Student Ministries Foundational scripture:

54:13 AMPC "And all your [spiritual] children shall be disciples [taught by the Lord and obedient to His will], and great shall be the peace and undisturbed composure of your children."

As leaders, it is our job to teach the next generation. The key point is that the call goes beyond biological children, extending to "spiritual" children as well.

Passing the Baton:                                                                                                              Pastor George has a ceremony that he does where he physically passed batons to the next generation. My upbringing in a household filled with track and field has given me a unique perseverance on baton passing. As encouragement, we need to understand that the passing of a baton in a relay race does not mean that the race is over for the one who passes. There is a handoff zone where both runners are sprinting together to make sure that speed isn't lost during the exchange. It's important to keep in mind that we are a team and that it's time that we all "pass our batons"… OTHERWISE.  We are people of faith and know that we win, but let's take as much ground for the Kingdom as possible!

Winning takes teamwork and the team in the Body of Christ is interracial, class-inclusive and intergenerational.

During our January Men’s Ministry kickoff meeting, Pastor George led us into this mandate with the Father’s Blessing:

The father’s blessing.

What an honor it was to receive the father’s blessing from Pastor George! It was a significant moment for the men of EMIC!

Gen 49:28  All these are the twelve tribes of Israel. This is what their father said to them as he blessed them, blessing each with the blessing suitable to him.

Pastor George invoked the father’s blessing on every man present and anointed and sent us as mentors, examples and sons of the household of faith – empowered to move into the Malachi 4:5-6 end-time calling of God.

“Whether we have children or not, every man is called to be a father in the faith.”
