Radiant Happenings! March 9th

Matthew 5:14 (TPT) says, Your lives light up the world. For how can you hide a city that stands on a hilltop?” That is Jesus saying that – about us!!

I’m sure we all, at some point in time, have driven in the blackness of night and seen patches of lights off in the distance and instinctively we know that is city or that is a small town in that direction – depending on the amount or type of light.

So, when is the last time you stopped to consider how much or what kind of light you are giving off? Clearly Jesus is making us aware that we are out in the open – as if up on a hilltop – like a city with its lights shining in the night.  Even if you aren’t trying to be noticed, Jesus is telling us, as His followers, we are shining SOMETHING!! What are you shining to the world and how much? Maybe you’re saying, “But Pastor Cathy, how do I know what I’m supposed to be shining?” Look at verse 16:

“So don’t hide your light! Let it shine brightly before others, so that your commendable works will shine as light upon them, and then they will give their praise to your Father in heaven.”

What are the commendable works that Jesus is talking about? Here is the definition for the word “works” from The Blue Letter Bible website:

  1. business, employment, that which anyone is occupied

    1. that which one undertakes to do, enterprise, undertaking

  2. any product whatever, anything accomplished by hand, art, industry, or mind

  3. an act, deed, thing done: the idea of working is emphasized in opp. to that which is less than work

However, there is that word “commendable” in front of “works”, which means we need to know the meaning of “commendable” (or “good” as it is written in the King James Version). Using the Strong’s Concordance, here is the meaning of “good” in this passage:

καλός kalós, kal-os’; of uncertain affinity; properly, beautiful, but chiefly (figuratively) good (literally or morally), i.e. valuable or virtuous (for appearance or use, and thus distinguished from G18, which is properly intrinsic):—X better, fair, good(-ly), honest, meet, well, worthy.

In a nutshell – SHINE by being the beautiful, valuable, virtuous, honest, daughter of God you are, in all that you set your hands to do!!
